The Vermillion Ranch is a private retreat on the spectacular Yellowstone River.  Situated on unmatched fly-fishing waters at the confluence of Sweetgrass Creek and the Yellowstone River, this historic ranch offers exclusive waterfront access to world-class trout fishing and a unique Montana getaway for the off-the-beaten-path traveler.

Owned by the Vermillion family since 1971, the ranch is protected by a conservation easement with the Montana Land Reliance and provides wonderful habitat for fish and wildlife. The 800-acre space offers nearly two miles of water frontage with unparalleled views of the Rocky Mountains, as well as lodging for up to 12 in two different beautiful and rustic buildings.

Southwest Montana’s longest river and its tributaries can all be accessed within a short drive of the Harrison Homestead.

The Fishing

The Harrison Homestead is located in the heart of Montana’s finest trout country. With its frontage on the Yellowstone River, numerous riffles, eddies and pools provide a myriad of fly-fishing opportunities. Along the property, trout average 16 inches with 20+ inch fish caught on a regular basis. The Yellowstone River is a wonderful dry fly river with great mayfly and caddis hatches in April and July, and exceptional terrestrial fishing with hoppers in August and September.

In addition to the Yellowstone, guests at the Ranch are a short drive from the Boulder River, the Stillwater River, and the Spring Creeks of Paradise Valley, as well as an endless collection of mountain streams and lakes that all can be waded or drifted.

Our guides have all spent years fishing and have the type of local knowledge that will help make your days on the water both productive and enjoyable.   It is their profession and they look forward to sharing some river time with you.

The Harrison Homestead has been restored to its full historic grandeur, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
This enchanting building has 3 levels, including a full basement with a bathroom, and can sleep up to 9. The Harrison Homestead offers four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen, dining room, and living room.  All meals are served by our chef in the dining room.

The basement level has been renovated to include another gathering space, large television and flanked by bedrooms and laundry room. A wide, cozy screened-in porch overlooks the spacious, lilac-framed yard and the grounds around the house are broad and open for those who enjoy strolling about.

The Yellowstone is a perfect river for a 4, 5, or 6 weight.  Fishing shifts between nymphing and streamer and fish are regularly caught in excess of 20 inches.  Guides have rods and reels for use and, other than the spring and later fall, almost all wading is wet wading
